City Team Ministries

When John the Baptist was preaching to the crowds in Jordan, he told them how to live: "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one with food should do the same." (Luke 3:11) The people at Church of the Highlands have a long history of doing this in many ways. One effort that the church participates in currently is a mission to the poor in the heart of San Francisco called the City Team Mission.

At City Team, men and women are fed, first the gospel, then dinner. There is room for 40 people to sit at tables and eat together. For many of them, this is their only meal that they sit and socialize politely with others. At times, people from the church will go and sit at the tables and talk with the diners, listening to their stories and counseling them. Each client at City Team has a story to tell - the stories they tell of their lives are amazing. Many of the people, mostly men, come just for dinner, and in feeding them we are fulfilling the mandate Christ gave us to feed the hungry. But for those who want more, for those who want a changed life, City Team has a resident program in Oakland through which the men can learn to live a joyful and useful life in Christ.

There is a need for you at City Team. Your listening ears are needed. Your home-baked goodies are needed, if you will take them in person. Consider the rough life these people lead. If we can remind them of the good times they have had, warm cookies from the oven their mothers made, the simple gift of new, warm socks, then they may be more willing to listen to the teaching that is offered. When you show you care by taking the time to listen to their life stories, you tell them that they are important. Perhaps in this way they will learn that God sees them as important. Ministry opportunities exist for substance abuse counselors, spiritual big brothers and sisters, and more.

Volunteers are welcome to help serve snacks, pray, or work in the clothing room for the on-site medical clinic Saturdays from 12-4 PM.  Call City Team for details.
