San Bruno Fire Update from Pastor Dave Smith

It has been 7 months since the San Bruno explosion and fire (September 9, 2011). Many residents are back in their homes; owners of the 55 destroyed homes are in the process of getting city approval for rebuilding; but all the residents are still recovering financially and emotionally.

A committee was formed just days after the fire to take care of the long-term needs in the recovery efforts. This committee is composed of representatives from the Red Cross; THRIVE (representing all the nonprofit agencies desiring to help); the City of San Bruno; PG&E; United Way; labor unions; private businesses; and myself, Pastor Dave Smith, representing Church of the Highlands and the rest of the "faith-based community" willing to meet any spiritual needs. Case Managers were hired to handle the needs of any residents who asked for help. Currently there are approximately 200 clients, with a variety of needs.

This committee, with the help of the Red Cross and the City of San Bruno, has opened a Resource & Recovery Center at 458 San Mateo Avenue in downtown San Bruno. Their phone number is 650.588.0940. The efforts will continue for at least 2 years. Yes, recovery always takes longer than we like. But our commitment is to meet the needs of our neighbors and help each of them to arrive at a "new normal" as soon as possible.

Please pray for the residents, especially those who are reluctant to ask for help. Pray for their financial restoration, emotional healing, and spiritual salvation. Pray for the committee members as well, as we strive to meet even the unanticipated needs.

In the meantime, be aware of any disaster preparedness training, to ready yourself to be a helper and a comfort the next time tragedy strikes.

Pastor Dave Smith

San Bruno Fire Information

Thank you to all who helped with material, food and financial donations. We are no longer accepting material or food donations. Should you wish to make a material donation, please contact the Salvation Army or Red Cross.

If you would still like to make a financial donation, please consider making it to the Salvation Army or Red Cross. This allows the funds to be used as they are needed to supply exactly what is needed. If you desire to make a financial donation to Highlands for the relief effort, make checks payable to Church of the Highlands and in the memo section write 'San Bruno Relief'.
