What is AWANA?
AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed) is a Wednesday evening, Bible-centered programs for children in pre-school and grades K-6 that focuses on learning God’s Word in a fun atmosphere. Each week, they provide consistent, positive teaching and training that stresses strong moral and spiritual values. Our children learn about the reality of God and the truth of the Bible. Incentives and awards are used to encourage children to progress.
Our Mission Statement:
To reach boys and girls with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him.
Cubbies is the club for preschoolers during the two years prior to regular kindergarten, born on or before December 2, 2006. Cubbies is unique because it supports and maintains the parents as the primary source of spiritual nurturing by directly involving them in the teaching and learning process. Cubbies uses fundamental Awana elements of Bible memorization, handbooks, awards, and activities. Developmentally appropriate lessons and activities combine basic Bible truths with popular preschool concepts of colors, shapes, numbers, and letters.
T&T (Truth & Training) is for boys and girls in kindergarten through 6th grades.

Can I observe Awana?
As a first-time visitor to AWANA, you are more than welcome to observe. If you have questions, comments or concerns, please talk to the Commander, the Club Director or Registrar. We ask that you do not disturb the leaders during class as they are focused on ministering to our children.
If you are not a visitor, please sign in at the Registration Desk to observe as we have a limited number of spaces available each night.
In AWANA Cubbies, due to the age of the children, we encourage parental participation in guiding the children and in helping with crafts, snacks, puppetry, practicing their verses, etc. We have lists for parents to know when it is their turn to (for example) bring snacks.
Who to Contact?
Any questions, please contact Pastor Matt Tinetti at 650-266-4487 or by email at Awana@HighlandsMinistries.com (please include Awana in the Subject line).

Where do I send my children?
Please bring your child(ren) to the registration table in the Mall inside the church entrance. Those at the Registration table can help answer your questions, help you register your children, show you how to sign in your child as well as where to pickup your child, etc.
On Wednesday nights, the Registration tables are our single point of contact for the parents.
Do You Need More Volunteers / Leaders?
First, ALL volunteers in our Awana ARE leaders. And all activities within the program are performed by volunteers.
Awana at Church of the Highlands is ALWAYS looking for Christians young or old, married or single who would like to serve the Lord by investing in the lives of youth by volunteering some of your time. There are many roles we need, including working with the children, Registration, serving dinner, etc. All leaders must have a background check. If you are interested in this vital service, please contact us.
What Can I Do to Help My Child Succeed?
Week by week, your children will grow spiritually as they learn Bible verses. Experience shows that encouragement from a parent will make a big difference in the spiritual growth of your children. Please set aside time each week to help your children study their worksheets.

More about AWANA:
Based in the Chicago area, Awana is the only organization with fully integrated evangelism and discipleship programs for ages 2 to 18 that actively involve parents, church leaders and mentors. Each week, more than 1.5 million children and youth, 250,000 volunteers and 170-plus field staff take part in Awana in over 22,000 churches in the U.S. and internationally. (Learn about the prayer, vision, mission and values of Awana.)
Awana works with churches from 100 different denominations. It began as a children's program at the North Side Gospel Center in Chicago in 1941. Lance Latham, North Side's senior pastor, collaborated with the church's youth director, Art Rorheim, to develop weekly clubs that would appeal to churched and non-churched kids, lead them to trust Christ for salvation and grow them in enduring faith and service to God.
Other churches learned about the success of the program and inquired about its availability. In 1950, Latham and Rorheim founded Awana as a parachurch organization. By 1960, 900 churches had started Awana programs. By 1972 Awana had begun its first international club. Today children and youth in more than 100 countries participate in Awana programs, and millions of adults are alumni.
The founders of Awana derived the Awana name from the first letters of "Approved workmen are not ashamed" as taken from 2 Timothy 2:15 of the Bible.
Today, more than 12,000 U.S. churches run Awana with programs in all 50 states. Awana can also be found in over 10,000 churches in 109 other countries. Jack Eggar is our President/CEO. Art Rorheim serves as our Co-Founder/President Emeritus.
